SPECIAL GUEST SHANNON BRIGGS TO ATTEND AMERICAN METAL & IRON FIGHT NIGHT AT THE TANK
SHANNON BRIGGS (48-5-1, 42 KO’s), the two-time heavyweight champion of the world and deadly knockout artist, will be in attendance at American Metal & Iron Fight Night at the Tank on Thursday, May 7 at 7:30 pm. Briggs will be on-site at HP Pavilion and is available for interviews as well as fan autographs and interaction.
Briggs began his career in 1992 and went undefeated in his first 25 fights. All but five fights ended in a knockout. He suffered his first loss when he was knocked out by undefeated Darroll Wilson in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1996.
Briggs went on to defeat Big George Foreman for the linear world heavyweight championship ending in a controversial decision and then went on to challenge Lennox Lewis for the WBC heavyweight title. In their 1998 fight, Briggs had Lewis in trouble early but was knocked down three times and lost by TKO.
Briggs won the WBO heavyweight championship title when he knocked out Sergei Liakhovich in the last round of a November 4, 2006 matchup. After a lackluster 11 rounds Briggs was losing on all three judges' scorecards. Sensing urgency, Briggs pressed the fight in the 12th round and knocked Liakhovich down. Briggs subsequently trapped him on the ropes and continued his assault, knocking Liakhovich out of the ring. Liakhovich landed on a ringside table and the referee stopped the bout.
After winning the WBO heavyweight title in 2006 Briggs went on to defend his title against Sultan Ibragimov in 2007. The fight was put on hold while Briggs got his health together; he was suffering from pneumonia and didn’t have the stamina to compete. Three months later in June of 2007 the fight happened, Briggs lost in a unanimous decision to the much smaller Ibragimov
Briggs has been out of the professional boxing world for over a year but has said that he will make his return.
