Ana Julaton – Boxer Blog – September 12 Fight Card
August 18, 2009

Q)    Why / how did you starting boxing?
I’m a Martial arts teacher at West Wind Bok Fu Schools in Alameda, a few years ago we started incorporating boxing to our curriculum.   In my first lesson, I got in the ring with a couple of our male instructors and we went at it.   I stayed in boxing ever since.

Q)    What fighters did you look up to growing up?
I love boxing now, but I wasn’t a fan of boxing to begin with. In fact, I hated it. I didn’t understand why two athletes would beat each other up. Once I understood the science I loved it! When I started training, I looked up to Manny Pacquiao and eventually became fans of Joe Frazier, Roberto Duran and Joe Louis.

Q)    What has been your most memorable fight?
It has to be the 2006 SF Golden Gloves at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. To win a major title in the town I was born in with over 5,500 people cheering was amazing! But a close second would be my pro debut. In that fight my opponent had a winning record with eleven pro fights and was ranked in the top 15 in the world. Since it was going to be my first time in the ring without a headgear and smaller gloves, I was overly cautious—I didn’t know what to expect. Then in the 1st ten seconds of the fight I scored a knockdown with an overhand right. I did it one more time with a left hook in the fourth round. Both those experiences were eye opening.

Q)    What do you want to accomplish in your boxing career?
What I’ve always set out to accomplish which is to give Female boxing a bigger stage. I don’t plan on staying in this game too long so I’d like to give fight fans exciting big fights (especially in the Bay Area). I’d like to contribute some attention for female fighters that will help the future of the sport. Before I leave this chapter in my life I’d like to make a big splash in the sport and contribute in a positive way.

Q)    What is your favorite aspect of fighting at the Tank?
It’s in the Bay Area. It was a goal of mine to win my first World Championship in the Bay Area and now I have the opportunity to do that in front of my people. My family is here, my friends are here, and a lot of my fans are here. I found out it will be Filipino Heritage night that evening and I feel very honored and proud to be a part of a historic event. It feels great to be close to home.

Q)    How do spend your time outside of the ring?
Reading a book, spending time with loved ones, taking a walk on a nice day, having a good laugh, etc. I’m a laid back person.

Q)    Do you have a message for your fans?
Thank you for your support throughout the years. All the positive comments and gestures are truly appreciated and not forgotten. It becomes a source of inspiration when things get tough in training and during fights. Thanks for everything!

Q)    What is one thing people don’t know about you?
I used to have short hair. I had a fade at one time, hahaha. When I was 18, I had a pixie cut.
